Penalosa is good, though would not be near his potential if not for Roach … as with many other great fighters of our time … Roach (pictured above) is a genuis at the sport … and has proven time and time again with world champions under his training …
While this was a Penalosa Exhibition with a pre-fight bill a mile long … I went for one reason only, to see Mr. Roach upfront / in person … mission accomplished, since him and Penalosa both stayed here at the hotel I am living at … met the both of the in the hotel lobby …
This was my first real try at flash photography … and it is difficult for me … the lighting in the place was horrible … so what you see is what it is I was capable of … the cool thing with this exhibition was; 1) it was held in Alabang where I was living at the time, 2) there were less than 500 people in attendanc, 3) the ticket cost me less than 10USD, 4) San Mig Beer was less .40 Cents, 5) the pre-fight entertainment was great and 5) I was able to get ringside to get these shots … it was simply a good time all the way around …
A bit on Roach … “Known as “La Cucaracha” and “The Choir Boy”, Roach turned pro in 1978 and spent most of his career as a Lightweight journeyman fighter. Roach was on the losing end of most of his high profile bouts. He dropped fights to former super lightweight champ Bobby Chacon and former lightweight champs Greg Haugen and Hector Camacho Sr.. Roach relied on a durable fighting style, and tried to outlast opponents in the ring. He was willing to take a shot to give a shot and ultimately this took its toll. Roach only went 13-12 in the last part of his career after starting 26-1″ …
Fantastic YouTube on Mr. Roach, enjoy!
